World Community Grid - BOINC for Windows is an easy-to-install version of BOINC, already configured for use with World Community Grid. BOINC is an application that allows the use of idle resources from any number of computers in specific projects. These computers will all be used as an enormous grid (and therefore, the concept of grid computing). World Community Grid is an institution, which involves IBM, that aims to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity. Anyone who wants to help this collective effort only has to download the application.
In Windows, no configuration is needed. You just install the software and it will do its work. Your screensaver will show the progress of the computation being done. As the software uses idle processor cycles, it will work in the background as you do your work, without any interference. However, if you need your resources back, to run a heavy application, you can turn it off, or simply configure it to only run as a screensaver. There are multiple configuration options, allowing to choose how much disk space can be used, or at which hours the applications will be allowed to run.
You need to register to download the software. Your account will register all the time donated to this project, allowing you to see your general contribution. World Community Grid has no specific project goal, instead, it manages various projects. At this time, some of these projects are: Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together - Phase 2, Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy - Phase 2, Help Fight Childhood Cancer, Nutritious Rice for the World, Help Conquer Cancer, Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2, FightAIDS@Home, Influenza Antiviral Drug Search, The Clean Energy Project, and Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together.
